Christine Vega. Pool Cleaner. February 18th , 2018.
Suction Side Driven: Water being drawn from the pool from either the pools skimmer or a dedicated plumbing line connected to the suction side of the pools recirculating pump. The cleaner is driven by a mechanism that is powered by the water drawn through the cleaner and sucking up debris at the same time. Which Cleaner is Best? Not so much as to which cleaner is best but, more to which cleaner is best for your particular pool and the environment in which the pool is located.
Examples of popular suction side automatic pool cleaners are the Hayward Pool Vac or Kreepy Krauly. Pressure Side automatic pool cleaners connect to the return line fitting in the wall of your swimming pool. Pressure side automatic pool cleaners use a powerful jet of water to move around your swimming pool, and a jet of water is used to draw debris up from the pool surface into a special filter bag connected to the pool cleaner. Pressure side pool cleaners may have an advantage over suction side cleaners because they are typically more powerful and can climb the walls of an inground swimming pool.
The other down side to these type cleaners is that the water returning to your pool is not flowing through the pool return jets and can begin to cause circulation problems. by not keeping the water turbid enough to prevent algae growth. It is can be an easy process in most swimming pools to convert to a boosted pressure side cleaner by changing out the cleaner head, replumbing, adding a booster pump and time clock. Suction cleaners operate on the principle of suction much like a vacuum.
So after spending countless hours reading service manuals, observing automated swimming pool cleaners or physically seeing a home owners purchase from day one never maintain their pool. I have decided to help people make a wise and educated choice when it comes to their investments in their backyards. There are several options when it comes to pool cleaners in the market today and it can be confusing at times. There are two categories of automated pressure side cleaners boosted and nonboosted cleaners.
The booster pump models have a separate pump and motor from the swimming pool pump. They require a minimal amount of water from the pool pump, the low volume of water is sent to the cleaner pump and boosted to operate the pool cleaner. These in my opinion are the best cleaner for any swimming pool application. They are easy to operate, clean the pool the well and most can handle large amounts of debris with no affect on the swimming pool cleaning equipment. My favorite cleaner happens to be a Polaris 280, they have a large throat for leaves and debris.
