I also dont like the fact that you are using the suction from the pool equipment to operate. You loose some of your skimmers ability to skim the top of the pool. My belief is the more you skim off the top of the pool the less you will have falling in your pool, that can be hard to achieve if your cleaner is taking up your skimmer. There are choices to be made in a purchase of an automatic pool cleaner and if your building your pool its a good time to look at these options. If your pool is already built your options are limited to your pocket book for most people.
Suction Side Driven: Water being drawn from the pool from either the pools skimmer or a dedicated plumbing line connected to the suction side of the pools recirculating pump. The cleaner is driven by a mechanism that is powered by the water drawn through the cleaner and sucking up debris at the same time. Which Cleaner is Best? Not so much as to which cleaner is best but, more to which cleaner is best for your particular pool and the environment in which the pool is located.
It functions under the same concept but it uses 2 motor pups instead. The additional pump is a booster to help increase water flow and pressure. It may be more efficient than its predecessor but a pressuredriven pool cleaner runs on more energy because of its extra motor pump. However, a few pool owners dont mind the added cost because of its increased efficiency. A suction side cleaner is another popular option. It looks like a vacuum cleaner that sucks dirt from the pool floor through its underside. Owners of this kind of automatic cleaner rave about its ease of usage and assembly.
The booster pump models have a separate pump and motor from the swimming pool pump. They require a minimal amount of water from the pool pump, the low volume of water is sent to the cleaner pump and boosted to operate the pool cleaner. These in my opinion are the best cleaner for any swimming pool application. They are easy to operate, clean the pool the well and most can handle large amounts of debris with no affect on the swimming pool cleaning equipment. My favorite cleaner happens to be a Polaris 280, they have a large throat for leaves and debris.
The other down side to these type cleaners is that the water returning to your pool is not flowing through the pool return jets and can begin to cause circulation problems. by not keeping the water turbid enough to prevent algae growth. It is can be an easy process in most swimming pools to convert to a boosted pressure side cleaner by changing out the cleaner head, replumbing, adding a booster pump and time clock. Suction cleaners operate on the principle of suction much like a vacuum.
